The Accident Compensation Commission Fiji (ACCF) has managed to save the government over half a million dollars since 2024 by not appointing a new Chief Executive Officer. This strategic decision is part of broader cost-cutting measures that have produced nearly $1.4 million in total savings, as highlighted by Maritino Nemani, Permanent Secretary for Employment. Despite not having a CEO, the Commission has not only maintained its efficiency and service delivery but has also elevated operational management within its existing small team, many of whom are working pro bono.
During a presentation to the Standing Committee on Public Accounts, concerns were raised by Committee Chair Esrom Immanuel regarding increased staff and legal costs. Specifically, legal expenses amounting to $270,000 in 2024 and $174,000 in 2023 were noted, highlighting a potential area of financial scrutiny despite overall savings.
One significant cost-saving measure was the termination of the contract with Veritas, resulting in $900,000 savings. The ACCF has streamlined its operations by ending the reliance on external firms for certain services, indicating a shift towards more in-house and efficient management. This move not only reduces expenditures but also fosters a more cohesive internal team dynamic, contributing to more sustainable operations in the long term.
These changes reflect a lean governance model that emphasizes cost-effective management and enhanced public resource optimization. The ACCF’s approach could serve as a model for other agencies seeking to balance cost savings with service quality, exemplifying how thoughtful restructuring can yield positive outcomes for both the government and its citizens.
Overall, this strategic operational model reinforces the government’s commitment to efficient public service while delivering tangible benefits through financial prudence. It also underscores the potential for adopting similar lean strategies across other sectors, leading to broader improvements in public administration.
