The Fijian government is committing $83.4 million to enhance the nation’s water supply and treatment systems, as outlined by Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau during discussions on the 2025-2026 National Budget. The funding aims to address long-standing challenges such as low water pressure and frequent pipe bursts due to aging infrastructure.

Key projects under this initiative include the $7.3 million Princess Road upgrade, designed to provide around-the-clock water access to about 14,000 residents in elevated areas such as Sakoca and Colo-i-Suva. Additionally, a new $4.3 million Packaged Water Treatment Plant will augment treatment capacity for Suva, Lami, and parts of Nasinu, serving a total of 230,000 residents.

Moreover, work has commenced on a new treatment plant and water supply scheme in Navua, with further enhancements planned, including $2.5 million dedicated to water mains in the Western Division and $5.6 million for the Benau Water Treatment Plant in the Northern Division. An investment of $5.3 million will also go towards fixing leaks to reduce water loss, while a residential support program will provide water tanks to 130 households at a cost of $0.78 million.

The budget also allocates $15.1 million for wastewater upgrades, which include improvements at the Kinoya and Pacific Harbour treatment plants, emphasizing the government’s comprehensive approach to modernizing Fiji’s water services.

These investments are aligned with ongoing efforts to revamp Fiji’s water infrastructure, with past initiatives including the substantial $284 million allocated for water and wastewater improvements in the nation’s previous budget. Continuing collaborations, such as partnerships with international entities through performance-based contracts, are aimed at drastically reducing water loss and ensuring safe drinking water for all Fijians.

Overall, while these measures respond to urgent needs, they also reflect a hopeful commitment to a sustainable future for Fiji’s water resources, enhancing quality of life and resilience in the face of ongoing challenges.
