Fiji’s 7s Team: Silver Linings and Future Aspirations

Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai expressed that the level of performance displayed by both the men’s and women’s teams at the 2024 Paris Olympics could inspire the nation and youth aspiring to represent Fiji. Tuwai made these remarks during a welcoming ceremony held on August 4, 2024, at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union, with family and supporters in attendance.

While acknowledging that the outcomes were not what many had anticipated, Tuwai emphasized the team’s resilience and potential to bounce back. He opened his speech by thanking God for the protection and guidance received during their month-long preparations leading to the campaign in Paris.

Tuwai also expressed gratitude towards the coaches, management, and teammates who stepped up to represent the nation at the prestigious Olympic Games. He conveyed heartfelt thanks to families and supporters for their unwavering encouragement.

The captain expressed regret for not meeting the expectations of the nation, apologizing for returning with a different color medal than desired, while admitting that the team narrowly missed their goal. He highlighted the difficulties of spending a month away from loved ones.

Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru praised both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their performances and thanked the coaching and management teams for their dedication throughout the tournament. He recognized the significant role that leadership and expertise play in the success of the teams.

Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board interim chairman Peter Mazey stated that the gathering was meant to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of both teams, which have instilled immense pride in Fiji. He commended the teams for showcasing the heart, resilience, skill, and determination representative of Fijian rugby.

Mazey noted that by representing the nation on the world stage, the athletes have inspired a younger generation to aspire to don the iconic jersey. He acknowledged that their achievement of winning a silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games is a testament to their hard work and the faith placed in them by fellow Fijians.

He expressed immense joy and admiration for the team, congratulating them for their historic win. Mazey also extended gratitude to the coaching staff, medical team, and everyone who played a role behind the scenes, emphasizing the importance of their dedication in guiding the athletes towards success.
