Fiji’s 7s Heroes: A Silver Medal and A Future to Inspire

Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai expressed that the performance from both the men’s and women’s teams at the 2024 Paris Olympics could inspire the nation and its youth aspiring to represent Fiji. This sentiment was shared during a welcoming ceremony for the teams on August 4, 2024, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, which included family and loved ones.

Tuwai acknowledged that while the results were disappointing, the team possesses the resilience to bounce back. He began his address by thanking God for guidance and protection throughout their month-long preparation leading up to the Games and upon their return.

“I want to express gratitude to our coaches, management, and everyone who stepped up to represent our country at this prestigious event, the Olympic Games. A heartfelt thank you to our families, including mothers, fathers, and partners, for your unwavering support,” Tuwai stated.

He also apologized for not meeting the expectations of the nation, noting that they fell short at the last minute despite their efforts. Spending a month separated from family was challenging for the players.

Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, praised the performances of both Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams, acknowledging the critical support from coaches and management throughout the tournament. He specifically recognized the continuous dedication of Osea Kolonisau and his family to the team.

Peter Mazey, interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board, emphasized that the gathering was a celebration of the extraordinary achievements of both teams, which have instilled immense pride in Fiji. He acknowledged the resilience, skill, and determination displayed by the players in facing formidable opponents in Paris.

“You’ve showcased the essence of Fijian rugby and inspired a generation of young athletes to aspire to don that iconic jersey,” Mazey said. He celebrated the team’s historic achievement of winning a silver medal at the 2024 Olympics, recognizing it as a testament to their hard work and the spirit of Fiji.

Mazey also expressed gratitude to the coaching and medical staff for their commitment, highlighting that the success of the young athletes would not have been possible without their unwavering support. He reminded everyone that the silver medal represents not just recognition but the hard work and sacrifices made throughout their journey.

Looking forward, he emphasized the importance of continued support for the teams, indicating that this silver medal should serve as a foundation for even greater accomplishments in the future. Mazey concluded by encouraging the players to take a well-deserved break and spend time with their families before facing new challenges ahead.
