At 71 years old, Saras Wati Singh from Lokia Road in Koronivia, Nausori, defies the traditional expectations of retirement as she tirelessly manages her farm, a testament to her determination and resilience. Twenty years ago, she assumed control of the poultry farm that once belonged to her son and has transformed it into a thriving enterprise. Despite facing significant challenges, Saras remains undeterred and has turned her farming venture into a source of purpose and community pride.
Saras, a dedicated small-holder poultry farmer, has taken complete financial charge of her operation, funding all expenses related to the maintenance of the farm, including feed, veterinary care, and other essentials. Currently, she manages an impressive flock of 6,300 chicks, employing three community helpers who share her commitment to quality and excellence in poultry care. Her hard work recently garnered recognition as she was awarded the Broiler Farmer of the Year at the National Agriculture Show in Nadi, a well-deserved acknowledgment of her contributions to agriculture.
“I didn’t want the shed to go to waste; it used to be my son’s, but now I have taken over its maintenance, and it is well-kept,” Saras shared. Passionate about her work, she emphasizes the importance of proper care to ensure the chicks thrive, stating, “Chickens are taken according to their weight, so it’s necessary to feed and look after them well if you want them to be sold and for business to keep running.”
Saras’ journey has not been without its trials. She has faced unpredictable weather and devastating floods that challenged her resolve, yet her optimistic spirit shone through. She values the technical support provided by the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, appreciating their guidance as it helps her enhance her farming practices. “I’m happy that the ministry recognizes us and gives us advice; it helps us improve and keep going,” she remarked.
Among her many contributions, Saras sells manure at $1 per bag, distributing up to 300 bags weekly to support nearby farms and gardens. Her entrepreneurial spirit and community engagement position her as a role model for the youth and women in Koronivia. “I try to engage people around me, employ them, so when I earn, they will earn too,” she stated, underscoring her commitment to collective progress.
Satish Kumar, a former Advisory Councilor of Koronivia, praised her invigorating efforts, noting that she has become an “inspiration to youth and women of the area.” He believes that her story serves as a reminder of the importance of being aware of one’s surroundings and making the best out of available opportunities.
Saras’ journey is a powerful testament to personal resilience. Even after the loss of her husband, Narendra Kumar, in 2000, she continues to honor his legacy through her unwavering dedication to farming. “I have the willpower to be strong, and this farm keeps me going,” she reflected, embodying the spirit of hope and determination.
