The Fijian Ministry of Education has affirmed its utilization of the $66 million Free Education Grant, highlighting the positive strides it has made in enhancing schooling infrastructure and learning conditions. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro provided insights in response to a parliamentary inquiry, emphasizing that strict oversight under the 2020 Financial Management Handbook ensures that funding is well-directed to meet essential educational needs, including upgrades to sanitation facilities and technological improvements in classrooms.

This funding reflects a substantial investment in over 1,000 schools across Fiji, where the major portion has been allocated to both primary and secondary institutions. Noteworthy enhancements have included the provision of interactive technology, such as panels and projectors as well as digital tools like laptops and internet access. The grant has also improved physical learning environments by furnishing classrooms with desks and chairs, refurbishing libraries, and equipping science labs.

In addition to infrastructural upgrades, the Free Education Grant has made significant contributions to vocational and technical training, supplying essential resources for various subjects like agriculture, home economics, industrial arts, and business studies. While Radrodro noted that the grant does not alter the teacher-student ratio, he remarked on its positive influence on student attendance rates, morale, and focus in learning.

Schools have also embraced this funding to promote teacher professional development and a range of extracurricular activities, fostering discipline and character development among students through programs like cadet training, Scouts, Girl Guides, and sports. This holistic approach encourages student engagement and well-rounded education.

These developments signal a promising path for Fiji’s education sector, showcasing the government’s commitment to enhancing learning environments and educational systems. The investment in facilities and interdisciplinary learning not only supports academic achievement but also nurtures future generations equipped with diverse skill sets crucial for contributing positively to society.
