The Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, has presented a comprehensive report to Parliament detailing the allocation of the $66 million Free Education Grant (FEG) for the 2024-2025 financial year and its impact across schools in Fiji. The breakdown revealed that primary schools received approximately $33.1 million, while secondary schools gained $25.8 million, and early childhood education (ECE) institutions were allocated $1.45 million. Notably, the total disbursed amount reached $66,913,937.31, slightly exceeding the initial budget due to necessary adjustments based on the needs of individual schools.

Over 700 primary schools, 170 secondary schools, and more than 400 ECE centers have benefitted from this funding. Radrodro emphasized that all educational institutions must adhere to the Financial Management Handbook 2020, which aims to promote responsible spending and accountability, while the Ministry of Education continues to monitor the utilization of funds to ensure fairness and effectiveness.

The Minister stated, “Free education is more than just tuition-free access – it’s about empowering every child with the tools and environment they need to thrive.” This investment in education comes alongside reforms allowing schools greater flexibility in how they utilize their funding, as indicated in previous initiatives where school management now has the autonomy to address local educational needs directly.

The government’s continued commitment to educational improvement, particularly in early childhood education, reflects an understanding of the critical role that these foundational years play in a child’s development. It illustrates a hopeful direction for Fiji’s educational landscape, aiming to empower schools and foster better connections within communities to ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed.

In summary, the ongoing efforts to enhance educational infrastructure, financial management, and accountability signal a positive shift aimed at improving educational outcomes in Fiji. As these initiatives take shape, there is optimism that they will cultivate a robust educational environment for future generations.
