Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica has announced a delayed launch for Fiji’s much-anticipated 5G network, which is now set for June 2024 due to setbacks related to USAID projects. This delay follows a stop work order issued by the Trump Administration for nearly all USAID programs, pending a 90-day review.
Despite this setback, Kamikamica has reassured the public that the Government remains committed to introducing the 5G network this year. Initially, the target for launch was set for March, but adjustments have been necessary to accommodate the unforeseen challenges. The Deputy Prime Minister noted that the government had approved 5G testing as soon as they took office, and testing has already been taking place in various locations across Fiji.
Kamikamica highlighted the significant benefits of 5G technology, which is expected to enhance internet speed and connectivity throughout the country. He mentioned that improvements would particularly benefit sectors such as agriculture, education, and healthcare, noting the transformative potential of telemedicine in facilitating remote diagnoses without the need for travel to urban centers like Suva.
Additionally, with the availability of Starlink internet services in Fiji, the rollout of 5G is set to further enrich connectivity options, opening doors to new opportunities for both individuals and businesses.
