Fiji is set to embark on an eagerly anticipated rollout of its 5G network beginning next year, with the initial phase targeting major urban centers including Suva, Nadi, Lautoka, and Denarau. Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica announced in Parliament that Phase One, scheduled for 2025-2026, will focus on areas with established fibre infrastructure, reliable power supply, and high population density to ensure that key commercial districts, tourism destinations, and emergency services benefit from the enhanced capabilities of 5G technology.
The rollout is structured in three phases, with Phase Two extending services to areas such as Nasinu, Lami, Labasa, and Savusavu between 2026 and 2027. The final phase, projected for completion by 2028, aims to bring connectivity to even more remote locations including Nausori, Sigatoka, Navua, Ba, Tavua, Rakiraki, Korovou, and Taveuni.
Kamikamica stressed the government’s commitment to addressing connectivity challenges, particularly in rural and maritime regions where many communities still rely on outdated 2G or 3G services. He highlighted that the deployment of 5G is designed to mitigate local pain points and ensure that its benefits extend beyond major cities to all Fijians.
Private 5G operators will be required to commit to upgrading rural networks as part of their licensing agreements, which aligns with the government’s broader objective of achieving digital equity across the nation. Previous discussions have underscored the role of innovative connectivity solutions like Starlink, which has already begun improving internet access in underserved areas, thus reinforcing the government’s vision for an inclusive digital future.
The upcoming 5G rollout is expected to revolutionize sectors such as healthcare, education, and agriculture, and will empower communities across Fiji to fully engage in the digital economy.
