The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a significant investment of $199.5 million (approximately $452.79 million Fijian) aimed at replacing critical bridges on Fiji’s main island. This initiative, known as the Critical Bridges Resilience Project, is set to enhance domestic transport connectivity, which will be vital for better access to markets, schools, and healthcare services.
The funding for this project will come from a combination of sources. A concessional loan of $120 million from ADB will serve as a primary source, accompanied by a $14.5 million grant from the Asian Development Fund (ADF). The Government of Fiji will also contribute $15 million towards the project.
Aaron Batten, the regional director of ADB’s Pacific Subregional Office, emphasized that the construction of four bridges in strategic locations—Lami, Medraukutu, Sabeto, and Viseisei—will vastly improve transportation links across the island. Additionally, the project will address the resilience of these structures, ensuring they can withstand natural disasters like earthquakes and liquefaction.
To further support this initiative, the ADB will conduct a comprehensive social and gender vulnerability assessment related to the transport sector, paving the way for an investment roadmap tailored for this area. The new bridges will not only feature adequate spaces for pedestrians but also incorporate elements aimed at increasing road safety.
Moreover, the Fiji Roads Authority will benefit from this project as it will enhance their asset management capabilities and promote the development of gender-responsive policies and investments.
This project is set to be co-financed by the World Bank, which will contribute an additional $50 million in loans.
In summary, the investment in Fiji’s bridge infrastructure is a hopeful step forward that promises to improve connectivity for thousands, bolster economic development, and strengthen resilience against natural disasters, ultimately contributing to the well-being of Fiji’s communities. Such initiatives highlight the commitment to building a more sustainable and connected future for the region.
