The 43rd Annual Fiji Seniors’ Golf Open is set to swing into action, hosted at the Fiji Golf Club in Suva, beginning tomorrow. This notable event, backed by sponsors Swire Shipping and V. Prasad Holdings Co. Ltd, will unite senior golfers aged 55 and over for three days of spirited competition.
With 60 confirmed participants and more anticipated at registration, the tournament kicks off with morning registration at 11 a.m. and a noon shotgun start, followed by a cocktail gathering. Among the men competitors are former champions PC Goundar, Robert Li, Alipate Voicaicake, and the previous year’s titleholder, Opetaia Ravai, all aiming to regain the championship. The ladies’ division will see previous winners Agnes Fong Toy and Susan Yee again attempt to claim victory, with Marica Margetts also contending. Sharon Smith, last year’s women’s champion, will not be defending her title this year.
The over-70 category will spotlight Thiphait Hussein, a familiar name in the championship circle, as he aims to capture the esteemed Jack Akbay Trophy once more. Newly eligible players like Tom Managreve, Paul Bennion, Richard Kwon, and Eric Nand are also expected to energize the competition with fresh talent.
The tournament will utilize a time draw on the initial day, transitioning to a seeded draw after two days of results, culminating in a prize-giving dinner at Central Cuisine Restaurant on Friday. This tradition not only highlights the competitive spirit prevalent among senior golfers but also underscores the camaraderie and shared enjoyment of the game.
Reflecting on previous editions, the tournament consistently provides a vibrant platform for past winners and new entrants alike to showcase their skills, fostering a welcoming environment that values both seasoned experience and emerging talent. This event continues to reinforce the strong community spirit within the senior golfing fraternity in Fiji, proving that age does not limit one’s passion or ability in sports.
