Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka recently visited the Northern Division of Fiji to assess the progress of the $300 million Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. Accompanied by Fiji’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Robert Lee, the Prime Minister’s tour focused on ensuring that the road upgrades, funded by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), align with local needs.

During the visit, Mr. Rabuka emphasized the significance of integrating local community input into the project’s planning and implementation. He aimed to ensure that the roadworks not only improve connectivity but also create job opportunities for the local workforce during the construction period.

Ambassador Lee expressed his approval of the initiative, highlighting its potential to strengthen infrastructure and promote regional development. He noted that the upgraded roads are expected to enhance critical sectors like tourism and renewable energy, particularly hydropower, while improving access for rural populations.

Key areas that were inspected included a 15-kilometer stretch of the Nabouwalu road from Bua to Nasolo, and a 35-kilometer segment of the Nabalebale to Dogoru-Wailevu West Coast road.

This project symbolizes a significant step towards uplifting the transportation infrastructure in Fiji, which could lead to sustained economic growth, improved access for communities, and the potential for long-term development in various sectors.

In summary, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project, supported by international cooperation, is positioned to bring substantial benefits to both local employment and regional connectivity, fostering hope for a prosperous future in Fiji.
