The Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) is set to play a key role in a forthcoming $250 million tourism project in Fiji, expected to create significant economic benefits for the nation. This development, touted as “a significant milestone for Fiji,” aims to generate approximately $26 million in income and create around 500 jobs. The project, which is being officially announced today, involves collaborative efforts with BSP Bank and Australian real estate company Realcorp, led by Bob Lowres, known for his work on Naisoso Island.

Realcorp has reported strong sales interest, securing $181 million already, and is optimistic about achieving full sales by the project’s projected completion in late 2026. This optimism aligns with FNPF’s increasing focus on the tourism sector, evidenced by its ownership of several major hotels and a substantial 30% stake in Fiji Airways, acquired during the COVID-19 pandemic. In its latest annual report, FNPF indicated that its investments yielded favorable returns as tourism activities resumed, leading to higher occupancy rates and revenue at its hotel holdings.

As one of Fiji’s largest investors, with a portfolio exceeding $10 billion, FNPF’s involvement extends to managing a wide range of notable properties, including the InterContinental Fiji Resort & Spa and Sheraton Fiji Resort. This engagement not only supports job creation but also fosters economic growth in the tourism sector, which is crucial as Fiji continues to recover from the impacts of the pandemic.

The anticipated economic influx from this and similar initiatives reflects a positive outlook for Fiji’s tourism industry, evidenced by government support for streamlining investment processes to ensure a favorable environment for both domestic and international investments. This bodes well for Fiji’s future as it positions itself as a prime destination for tourism, emphasizing resilience and the importance of sustaining economic development.
