President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu recently highlighted the ongoing issues of poverty and hardship plaguing a considerable segment of Fiji’s population. Speaking at the inauguration of the new parliamentary session, he revealed that recent research indicates a significant portion of the population lives below the poverty line, with another 25 percent experiencing hardship just above the threshold in both urban and rural areas.

These alarming findings underscore the necessity for the government to create inclusive and well-targeted policies that are supported by robust evidence. President Lalabalavu emphasized that the government’s agenda for 2026 and beyond is not solely focused on economic growth, but also on ensuring that such growth translates into tangible benefits for the citizens.

“It is crucial that growth generates decent employment, safeguards vulnerable groups, and invests in the skills and capacities of our people,” he stated.

In guiding the formulation of government policies and programs, the President identified three foundational principles. The first principle, unity in diversity, advocates for inclusive progress that benefits every citizen, irrespective of their background or location. The second principle, sustainability and resilience, stresses the importance of safeguarding the economy, environment, and the well-being of current and future generations. Lastly, the principle of integrity and good governance aims to cultivate trust in public institutions and leadership.

“The implementation of these principles will guide the creation of legislation, budget allocations, institutional reforms, and public policies across all sectors,” President Lalabalavu noted. This comprehensive approach is designed to steer national decision-making towards tackling inequality, alleviating hardship, and fostering a more inclusive and robust society in Fiji.

This proactive stance reflects the government’s commitment to addressing pressing social issues while simultaneously striving for sustainable growth. The incorporation of these guiding principles is a hopeful sign for a more equitable future for all Fijians.
