Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) CEO Senikavika Jiuta has addressed misconceptions regarding the public consultations on the proposed 2025 electricity tariff, emphasizing that these meetings are intended for direct dialogue rather than just public awareness. Jiuta highlighted the need for personalized discussions to counteract misinformation circulating among the public.
The consultations aim to involve both the general public and stakeholders from the commercial sector. Jiuta stated there is a commitment to engage with the community after receiving significant feedback through social media, which has prompted additional consultations. She confirmed that a decision regarding the revised tariff would be made after a 21-day review period.
Lawrence Kumar, president of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce, echoed concerns regarding the proposed tariff increase. He advocated for a thorough examination of the increment, suggesting that the implementation of these changes be delayed to allow for proper public discourse. Kumar appreciated the Finance Ministry’s decision to postpone a tariff hike originally scheduled for January 1, allowing time for these consultations to take place. He stressed the importance of transparency and the need for genuine engagement with community concerns.
Lautoka resident Sereima Bulou also called on the public to take part in these forums. Speaking during a consultation session, she lamented that many individuals complain about tariff increases without participating in discussions. She stressed that public input is crucial for understanding the potential impacts on both domestic users and businesses since any adjustments to the tariff would ultimately affect the cost of living for everyone.
The ongoing consultations will continue today at the Lautoka Sugar City Mall and in Ba, providing an opportunity for the community to voice their opinions and contribute to the decision-making process regarding the electricity tariff. The engagement of residents in these discussions is seen as essential in shaping a more informed and inclusive outcome for Fijian electricity consumers.
