Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad is pledging that the upcoming National Budget for 2025-2026 will be “a responsible budget.” This announcement comes as many low-income earners in Fiji express their concerns about rising living costs, inadequate infrastructure, and stagnant wages. Residents have conveyed a strong desire for tangible improvements in healthcare, education, and social support.

Resident Abunesh Prasad emphasized the urgent need for increased investment in the health sector, pointing out that the current shortage of healthcare professionals is leading many to seek opportunities abroad. “If we can look at their salaries and invest more in our education, we can cultivate better leadership in Fiji,” he stated.

Bale Savou, another resident from Suva, expressed frustration over poor social services and the inequitable conditions of transportation. He noted the need for better road infrastructure, which he believes contributes to a high number of road accidents.

Furthermore, Luke Caka from Lami highlighted the necessity for wage increases, asserting that more support for workers is vital as the government moves forward.

In response, Professor Prasad affirmed that the 2025-2026 budget will take both immediate and long-term needs into account, stating, “It will be based on what we anticipate might happen globally.” He reassured citizens that the government remains committed to funding essential services such as roads, water, electricity, and healthcare, particularly in rural areas.

The government is working towards enhancing service delivery while navigating a challenging global economic landscape. Getting feedback from community consultations is, according to Prasad, a part of a broader strategy to involve citizens in shaping budget decisions, fostering a sense of collaboration and transparency.

This collaborative and inclusive approach reflects the government’s commitment to address pressing social needs, thus laying a hopeful foundation for economic progress. The ongoing dialogue marks a promising shift towards responsive governance that considers the voices and needs of all Fijians.
