At just 19 years old, Lania Alexander Robertson is confidently navigating a path toward a future that many young women in Fiji have yet to envision. With maternal ties to Scotland, Ms. Robertson was raised by her mother, Christina Aileen Robertson, in a single-parent household that instilled in her the belief that strength is defined not by circumstances but by a positive mindset.
Today, Ms. Robertson is making waves in Fiji’s maritime landscape, being the only female among four students to receive a prestigious scholarship from Swire Shipping as part of its Madigi Vou initiative. This scholarship allows her to pursue a Diploma in Marine Engineering (Level 5) at Fiji National University’s Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies. For Ms. Robertson, this achievement is not merely an academic milestone; it represents the fulfillment of a long-held dream.
“Marine engineering has always been my dream,” she stated. “Even though it is a male-dominated field, I never allowed that to define my limits. My mother has been my pillar of strength, teaching me to believe in myself, break barriers, and pursue my passion with courage and determination.” The valuable lessons learned at home have equipped her to face challenges and self-doubt, reinforcing her commitment to carve out a niche in an industry where women are still underrepresented.
