The Ministry of Public Works has allocated $15.9 million to Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) to fund the construction of 73 projects aimed at extending grid electricity access to remote areas throughout the country. These projects are projected to benefit over 1,636 households, with installations taking place in Central Viti Levu, the Western Division, and Vanua Levu. Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau confirmed that these projects have successfully moved past the design and procurement stages and are currently underway in the construction phase.
The initiative is designed to decrease reliance on fossil fuels and enhance energy connectivity, providing vital access to education, health, and economic opportunities for rural families. A key focus of these projects includes a boost in solar power utilization, further improving energy access in both rural and maritime locales. This effort forms part of the Fiji government’s broader development goals, as outlined in the 2024-2025 national budget.
Previously, a similar commitment was made, with $19.1 million being allocated by the Department of Energy to EFL in the last three years for grid extension and wiring projects, benefiting approximately 1,500 households. The current government’s investments reflect a continuous effort to meet rising energy demands and enhance the overall infrastructure for sustainable development.
These ongoing projects not only address current energy requirements but also serve to empower local communities, paving the way for a greener and more prosperous future in Fiji. With these advancements, the hope is to foster a climate of growth and sustainability that supports all Fijians, especially in underserved regions.
