At just 12 years old, Setaita Senikuba Vakaweleivalu is embodying the spirit of determination and passion as she emerges as one of the youngest talents in Suva Volleyball. Currently in Class 8 at Stella Maris, her journey began long before she ever stepped onto a competitive court, rooted in her early years watching her parents engage in spirited volleyball matches, particularly at the lively Sukuna Camp.
Hailing from Levuka i Gau in Lomaiviti with maternal ties to Matanimoli, Noco, Rewa, Setaita grew up in the bustling Nasova Police Barracks surrounded by the sounds of volleyball, which soon became a vital part of her life. The sport swiftly became second nature to her, with courts that were perpetually busy, enhancing her passion for the game.
Setaita draws inspiration from the late Teresia Vocevoce, a highly respected coach within the Police Women’s volleyball community who passed away recently. Vocevoce’s guidance played an integral role in shaping Setaita’s early understanding of the core values of discipline, teamwork, and belief in oneself.
Her journey took a transformative turn when Mila Karisitiana, captain of the Phoenix team under Suva Volleyball, recognized her potential and offered her a spot on the team. Wearing the Suva jersey for the first time at the recent Vulaca Tournament was a significant milestone for Setaita, who described the experience as emotional and unforgettable as she stood alongside seasoned players despite still being in primary school.
Setaita exhibits remarkable maturity and gratitude for the opportunities afforded to her by the Suva Volleyball Association, which has made it a mission to nurture young players through pathways of learning and inclusion. She expresses heartfelt appreciation for her supportive parents, especially her father, who continues to encourage her aspirations from overseas.
Looking ahead, Setaita is eagerly anticipating her participation in the upcoming Western Rally, Vanua, and Easter championships, signaling a bright future in volleyball for this talented young athlete. Her story serves as a reminder that big dreams can indeed sprout from humble beginnings, and age is no barrier when passion drives ambition.
