Fiji’s $10 Million Health Boost: A Step Towards Better Care?

The Fijian government’s allocation of $10 million monthly to Health Care (Fiji) Private Ltd for the management of Ba and Lautoka hospitals has been clarified by Aspen Medical’s CEO, Gavin Whiteside. He emphasizes that these funds are not intended for profit but are crucial for the ongoing operations of the hospitals, covering expenses such as staff salaries, medications, insurance, and utility bills.

Whiteside has stated, “This $10 million-a-month goes directly towards keeping the facilities operational, ensuring that citizens receive the quality healthcare they deserve.” Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad confirmed the arrangement, noting that the government is currently reviewing the public-private partnership (PPP) agreement involving HCF and Aspen Medical, with the aim of creating a solid healthcare model for the entire country.

The minister articulated the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services across Fiji, expressing the belief that the ongoing review will address shortcomings in the current arrangement and build a more robust healthcare system. “This partnership is being developed to serve as a model, ensuring that health facilities nationwide are improved and that every citizen receives proper care,” stated Prasad.
