The Ministry of Forestry has announced a significant investment of $1.5 million aimed at bolstering sustainable maritime pine operations across Fiji. This funding will specifically enhance the Muani Pine Scheme in Kadavu, facilitating the commercialization of 20,000 tonnes of mature pine trees throughout the upcoming 2024-25 fiscal year.
To ensure efficient harvesting and transportation, a formal agreement has been established between Fiji Pine and the Ministry. This collaboration will contribute to subsidizing barge transport and logging activities, streamlining the extraction and processing of valuable timber resources.
Additionally, plans are underway to expand operations to the regions of Solodamu and Namalata. This initiative not only targets economic growth but also emphasizes environmental sustainability. To further support these efforts, the Ministry plans to construct a jetty in Solodamu, with another proposed for Ono in the following year, enhancing local infrastructure and boosting the pine timber supply chain.
These efforts resonate with previous announcements from the Ministry regarding the forestry sector’s importance within Fiji’s economy. Minister Alitia Bainivalu previously noted that the forestry and logging industry contributed approximately $31.1 million to Fiji’s GDP in 2022, underscoring its critical role in national economic development.
Fiji’s commitment to sustainable forestry practices is expected to yield positive outcomes for local communities, promoting both economic growth and environmental stewardship. Initiatives like this could create lasting benefits, fostering a greener future while improving the livelihoods of those involved in the forestry sector.
