Fijians Warned: Sharing Intimate Images Could Lead to Serious Legal Consequences

The Online Safety Commission (OSC) has issued a crucial reminder to the people of Fiji about the legal implications of sharing intimate images and videos without consent. Under section 25 of the Online Safety Act 2018, it is illegal to post or threaten to post such intimate visual recordings of individuals. The OSC strongly advises anyone considering the sharing of these images to reconsider their actions immediately.

The Commission highlighted the potential severe repercussions for those who violate this law, emphasizing that individuals could face fines up to $20,000 or imprisonment for up to five years, or both. They encourage victims of such violations to come forward and file complaints. Upon receiving a complaint, the OSC commits to investigating the matter thoroughly, working to remove any offending content from online platforms and, if necessary, collaborating with the Fiji Police Force to hold perpetrators accountable.

This warning from the OSC serves as an important reminder of the need for respect and consent in our digital interactions. In today’s increasingly connected world, it’s vital to advocate for online safety and protect individual rights.

The OSC’s proactive approach promotes a safer online environment, fostering a culture of respect and responsibility in how we share content. This initiative empowers individuals to take action against violations, reinforcing the message that everyone has the right to privacy and dignity.
