The Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Sakiasi Ditoka, has urged the citizens of Fiji to refrain from unnecessary travel as the country faces severe weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and flooding. During a press conference at the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), he emphasized the importance of safety and advised the public to cancel gatherings and stay indoors.

The Fiji Police Force will enforce movement restrictions to ensure community safety during this crisis. Mr. Ditoka reiterated, “Only move when it is absolutely necessary,” highlighting the need for caution amidst the extreme weather challenges posed by an active trough of low pressure affecting the region.

Flood warnings are currently in place for low-lying areas as the adverse weather continues. Evacuations have begun in Semo Village, where two homes were partially damaged, and in Nalele, Nadroga, where nine homes also faced damage. Thankfully, there have been no reported casualties. However, several roads remain impassable, and six evacuation centers in the Western Division are providing shelter for 312 evacuees.

The numbers of evacuees by location are as follows:
– Andrews Primary School: 183
– Saioni Church: 33
– Korovuto Secondary School: 14
– Vou Dance Group office: 7
– Nalele Community Hall: 69
– Tavua District Primary School: 9

Minister Ditoka expressed gratitude to the police for their assistance in the safe evacuation of affected families.

Health concerns are also rising, with the Ministry of Health alerting the public to the potential risk of waterborne diseases such as typhoid and diarrhea in the aftermath of flooding. Dr. Tudravu has strongly advised residents to boil drinking water and store it in clean containers while urging parents to keep children away from potentially contaminated floodwaters. Communities are encouraged to keep essential items such as food, medication, and hygiene products in elevated areas to mitigate health risks.

Mr. Ditoka has called on families and community leaders to collaborate with the Government during this critical time. He urged households to ensure they have enough food, water, emergency supplies, and medications to last several days.

As Fiji faces this challenging period, citizens are reminded to stay vigilant, adhere to safety guidelines, and prioritize health and hygiene.

In these trying times, the resilience and support within communities can provide hope and aid recovery efforts. By working together and following safety measures, Fijians can emerge stronger in the face of adversity.
