Fijians Urged to Cherish New $7M Urban Oasis

Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has urged all Fijians to take charge of the upkeep of the newly renovated Ratu Sukuna Park, which cost $7 million. During the park’s opening ceremony on Monday evening, Kamikamica highlighted the significance of preserving the park as a source of comfort and pride for future generations.

He described the redeveloped park as a complete transformation from its original state, representing the nation’s growth and dedication to urban renewal. The upgraded park now includes modern features such as a new podium structure, innovative lighting, contemporary furniture, a digital screen with surround sound, and enhanced landscaping that combines hardscapes with greenery.

Additionally, the new water feature enhances the monument of Ratu Sukuna, providing a peaceful ambiance to the park. Kamikamica remarked that the park serves as more than just a green space; it stands as a tranquil refuge within the vibrant city, promoting peace, creativity, and a fresh start for all.

He emphasized that parks like Ratu Sukuna are vital for the overall health and wellness of communities, offering areas for families to gather, children to play, and individuals to connect with nature. These recreational spaces enhance the livability of urban environments, making them places where residents can thrive, not just work and reside.

Kamikamica called for continued collaboration to cultivate Suva into a city that embraces nature, aiming to maintain its reputation as one of the top cities for environmental sustainability according to the Global Cities Index.
