Fijians residing in Labasa and Savusavu will have the extraordinary chance this week to engage with senior government officials, including Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and Deputy Prime Minister Biman Prasad, during a series of town hall forums. This initiative marks a significant collaboration between Fiji’s leading media outlets, including The Fiji Sun, The Fiji Times, Mai TV, and others, under the banner of the Fiji Media Association (FMA).

The forums aim to foster open dialogues on pressing community issues, encompassing topics such as economic development, infrastructure improvements, public service accessibility in rural areas, education, healthcare, tourism, and agriculture. Residents will have ample opportunity to voice their concerns and pose questions to their government representatives.

Upcoming events include a forum in Savusavu, scheduled for 7 PM on Wednesday, July 23, at Hotel Grand Epic, followed by another in Labasa at 7 PM on Thursday, July 24, at the Fiji Football Association Conference Room. Both events will be broadcast live across multiple radio, television, and digital platforms, ensuring a wide reach and allowing real-time interaction between citizens and government officials.

FMA General Secretary Stanley Simpson highlighted the importance of this initiative in reinforcing democratic dialogue, stating, “In an age of fake news and misinformation, our goal is to foster transparent dialogue and public engagement.” The collaboration of major news organizations is seen as a revolutionary step towards enhancing civic engagement and building trust in public institutions.

This series of forums exemplifies a positive movement towards greater accountability and interaction between the government and the public, reinforcing the significance of free discourse in a healthy democracy. Moreover, the support from the United States Embassy underscores the pivotal role of media in diplomatic and democratic processes.

As a hopeful sign moving forward, the FMA has committed to organizing similar forums across the country in the future, further promoting citizen engagement in national dialogues and enhancing the fabric of Fijian democracy.
