Vodafone Fijiana 15s head coach Ioan Cunningham has shared plans for a training camp in Sigatoka, set to take place in the first week of this month. As he prepares for an important clash against the Wallaroos, scheduled for next month, Cunningham is eager to kick off a dynamic preparation phase leading into the Women’s Rugby World Cup in August.
Cunningham, who previously coached the Wales Women’s team, is on a mission to identify talented eligible players for the Fijiana squad. He expressed excitement over the opportunity to scout a wide variety of players, indicating, “We want to see as much of the talent that’s available for Fijiana and then obviously we will narrow that selection down as we get closer to our preparation towards the World Cup.”
Currently, Cunningham is monitoring performances in the Super W competition closely in order to find eligible and promising players to bolster his squad. The upcoming match against the Wallaroos on April 3 will serve as an essential step in fortifying the team as they gear up for the Rugby World Cup, where they will face tough opponents, including Canada, Scotland, and Wales.
The emphasis on talent identification and team cohesion could serve as a strong foundation for the Fijiana’s campaign, especially given the renewed perspective brought by Cunningham’s coaching style, which seeks to blend Fiji’s natural flair with strategic discipline. This focus mirrors the team’s objectives from earlier years, where they aimed to enhance their overall effectiveness on the pitch while retaining their dynamic style of play.
With optimism running high and the commitment of both the coaching staff and players, this upcoming season provides a hopeful environment ripe for fostering new connections, strategies, and ultimately showcasing the potential of women’s rugby in Fiji on an international stage.
