Vodafone Fijiana head coach Ioan Cunningham has announced an exciting line-up for the opening match of the Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship, featuring five debutants. Two of the newcomers, Salote Nailolo from Namara and New Zealand-based Michella’e Stolz, are both just 19 years old, bringing youthful energy to the team.

Joining them are Litiana Vueti, a former Lautoka fullback, Suva rugby hooker Selai Naliva, and Manuqalo Noame Komaitai, who serves in the British Army. Vueti will be starting the match while the others are set to come off the bench, reflecting Cunningham’s strategy to mix experience with fresh talent.

Cunningham noted the complexities involved in team selection, emphasizing that adaptability, mental resilience, and performance in unfamiliar environments are all vital. He pointed to the need for improvement in areas such as territory control and tackle accuracy, especially after Fijiana’s last encounter with the Wallaroos where they struggled with only 31% of territory and a staggering 41 missed tackles. The aim for this tournament is to maintain at least 50% territory and keep missed tackles below 15 per match.

The coach underscored that success extends beyond winning; it’s about improving team performance, clarity in the game plan, and inspiring future generations. He highlighted the significance of this tournament not just for immediate success, but as a foundation for Fijiana’s aspirations for the Women’s Rugby World Cup in the future.

As they look forward to their match against Tonga at 2 PM today at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, the team carries a hopeful spirit. Their commitment, blending of youth and experience, and an eagerness to inspire the next generation of athletes promise to enhance the sport’s recognition and support in Fiji. Fans can expect an exciting performance as the Fijiana XV aims to leave their mark in this championship and beyond.
