Vodafone Fijiana 15s captain Alfreda Fisher expressed the team’s eagerness to develop further after their close 31–24 defeat to the USA Women’s team in Washington DC. Despite her personal success in scoring two tries during the match, Fisher quickly redirected the attention to her teammates and the overall effort put forth by the squad.

“I’m really grateful this was a team effort. We fought until the final whistle,” remarked the 21-year-old. The Fijiana, currently ranked 19th globally, showcased commendable tenacity as they battled against the ninth-ranked USA Eagles in a match that involved fast-paced action and solid physicality.

Notably, the match featured emerging stars such as Josivini Naihamu, who also scored a try, and fullback Litiana Vueti, who had an impressive performance by successfully converting three kicks and adding a penalty to the scoreboard.

Fisher emphasized the need to focus on enhancing team defense and reinforcing the connection among players in different positions on the field. “We’re working on our defense, making sure the line is filled and not compressed inside. It’s also about strengthening our connection between the forwards and backs,” she added.

The Fijiana team is set to regroup quickly, with a rematch against the USA scheduled for this upcoming Sunday, followed by a home clash against Samoa on August 9th at Churchill Park in Lautoka. This upcoming series of games presents an opportunity for the Fijiana to build on their performances and sharpen their skills ahead of future challenges, including significant competitions like the Rugby World Cup.

This progressive journey in women’s rugby not only signals a positive trend for the Fijiana team but also inspires hope for the growth of women’s rugby in Fiji, highlighting the dedication and spirit shown by young players like Fisher and her teammates.
