The Vodafone Fijiana XV team delivered an impressive performance against Hong Kong China, winning 38-3 in their opening match as they prepare for their next WXV3 encounter against Samoa on October 12 in Dubai.
Coach Mosese Rauluni acknowledged that the team was somewhat sluggish in the first half, giving away possession and penalties to their opponents. However, he noted that they improved in the second half, although some mistakes still pressured the team. Rauluni expressed satisfaction with the victory, especially following recent losses to Scotland and the Netherlands.
“The win has boosted the players’ confidence as we head into a challenging match against Samoa in two weeks,” he remarked. “We’ll need strong set-pieces; our physicality in ball carries and defense must be enhanced.”
Captain Karalaini Naisewa, who scored two tries, spoke positively about the team’s performance, noting the familiar weather conditions in Dubai. She emphasized the need to address their errors and prepare for a tough match against Samoa, insisting that improved fitness levels are crucial for their success.
Fiji’s scoring began with prop Anasimeci Korovata breaking through the Hong Kong China defense for a try, followed by Kolora Lomani adding another with the team leading 10-0 after a missed conversion. Hong Kong China responded with a penalty kick, making it 10-3.
Naisewa extended the lead with a try from a maul, and after successful conversion by Luisa Tisolo, Fiji led 17-3. Winger Repeka Tove scored the fourth try, which was converted by Tisolo for a 24-3 advantage. Flanker Sulita Waisega then added another try, and Tisolo converted, bringing the score to 31-3. Naisewa scored her second try, with Tisolo adding the final conversion to secure the victory at 38-3.
In another news, the national under-18 schoolboys team defeated Australia 26-14 in their opening match at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, last Saturday, and will face their next opponent tomorrow at 3 PM.
