The Vodafone Fijiana XV team delivered an impressive performance against Hong Kong China yesterday morning (Fiji time), winning 38-3 in their opening match of the WXV3 tournament. This result sets a positive tone for their upcoming match against Samoa on October 12 in Dubai.
Coach Mosese Rauluni noted that the team struggled in the first half, giving their opponents excessive possession and committing penalties. “We managed to capitalize a little more in the second half, but there were still minor errors that created pressure on us,” Rauluni commented. He expressed relief at securing a win after two recent Test match losses to Scotland and the Netherlands.
“The victory has boosted the players’ confidence as we prepare for a tough encounter with Samoa,” he added. Rauluni emphasized the need for improved set-pieces and increased physicality in both ball carrying and defense.
Captain Karalaini Naisewa, who scored twice, praised the team’s performance while acknowledging the need to address errors in their gameplay. “The weather conditions in Dubai are similar to those at home, and we will work to improve our mistakes ahead of next week,” Naisewa said. She recognized the challenge posed by Samoa and affirmed the team’s intention to perform strongly. Naisewa also emphasized the importance of increasing fitness levels to secure the next win.
Fiji’s scoring began with prop Anasimeci Korovata breaking through the Hong Kong China defense for the team’s first try, followed by a second try from Kolora Lomani. Although both conversions by Luisa Tisolo were missed, Tisolo later converted Naisewa’s try to extend the lead. Naisewa’s captaincy was instrumental, contributing to Fiji’s fourth try by winger Repeka Tove and sealing the victory with her second try, securing a final score of 38-3.
In other news, the national under-18 schoolboys team achieved victory against Australia with a score of 26-14 in their first match at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka last Saturday. They are set to play their second match at 3 PM tomorrow.
