The Vodafone Fijiana XV rugby team showcased their dominance in their opening match of the 2025 Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship, securing a resounding 59-5 victory over Tonga at Lawaqa Park yesterday. Under the guidance of coach Ioan Cunningham, the Fijianas delivered an electrifying performance, scoring six tries in the first half alone, establishing a commanding 30-0 lead by halftime, despite the challenging wet conditions caused by continuous rain.

Winger Josifini Neihamu starred in the match, contributing two tries with her keen attacking lines. The scoreboard was also bolstered by Mereoni Nakesa, debutant fullback Litiana Vueti, and prop Loraini Senivutu, who each made significant impacts. Setaita Railumu managed to cross the line as well, but all conversion attempts in the first half met with failure.

Cunningham expressed pride in his team’s effort, noting, “We’ve worked hard over the past two weeks. Scoring 59 points in this weather is something I’m really proud of.” The second half saw the Fijianas maintain their aggressive approach, adding five more tries from players including Ema Adivitaloga, Neihamu, Asinate Serevi, and a double from powerful winger Sala Nabuli. Vueti capped off her impressive debut by successfully converting two tries in the second half.

Tonga managed to score one consolation try through Viviena Halahingano, with their captain, Tonga Tuiaki, commending her team’s resilience despite the defeat. Tuiaki expressed gratitude for their supporters, saying, “I’m proud of my sisters and also thank our families for their support.” A strong crowd braved the elements to support both teams during this exciting encounter.

This powerful opening sets a hopeful tone for the Fijiana as they look ahead to their next challenge against Samoa on June 14 at the same venue. The mixture of experienced players and promising newcomers highlights the growth of women’s rugby in Fiji and showcases the team’s potential to inspire future female athletes in the region.

The commitment and teamwork displayed by the Fijiana XV in this match are not only a testament to their dedication but also reflect the evolution and promotion of women’s rugby within Fiji. As they continue to shine on the international stage, fans and supporters eagerly anticipate the journey ahead, filled with exciting performances and further achievements.
