The Vodafone Fijiana XV is gearing up for its opening match against Tonga at the 2025 Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship, scheduled for next Saturday at Lawaqa Park. Veteran forward Bitila Tawake, returning to the squad after missing last year’s tournament due to injury, expressed confidence in the team’s preparations, emphasizing the importance of playing on home soil as they head into a World Cup year.

“Preparations are going so far so good. Everyone’s trying to come together as one. It’s huge because we’re hosting and also heading into a World Cup year. The pressure’s real, but we’re ready,” Tawake stated. She highlighted the positive blend of new players in the squad, mentioning how these new talents are injecting fresh energy into the team.

With World Cup spots on the line, Tawake noted that even those not selected for the match are continuing to train hard. “Everyone took the selections well. Those not picked are still training. No one’s giving up,” she said. Tawake views the match against Tonga as a crucial build-up before facing Samoa, whom she characterized as a significant rival. “Tonga is a good build-up. But Samoa, it always feels like a final,” she mentioned.

The Fijiana XV’s strategic preparation focuses on improving their finishing and tightening up their defense. “Our biggest work-on is our finishing, especially off our set-pieces. That and tightening up our defence,” explained Tawake.

The leadership of young captain Alfreda Fisher is also a topic of discussion among the players. Tawake voiced her support for Fisher, pointing out that seasoned veterans are guiding her through this challenging experience: “It’s good to have someone else lead. It’s a learning curve for her, and the seniors are helping. She’s doing well under pressure.”

Reflecting on the team’s dynamics and preparation, there is a sense of optimism that extends beyond the championship, indicating growth and potential for women’s rugby in Fiji. The tournament not only provides an opportunity for current players to display their skills but also serves to inspire the next generation of female athletes in the region. This combination of experienced leadership and burgeoning talent showcases Fiji’s commitment to elevating women’s rugby on an international stage.

As the Fijiana XV embarks on this journey, supporters can expect thrilling performances that promise to enhance the sport’s stature in Fiji and highlight the dedication of the players and coaching staff.
