The Super Rugby W competition is establishing itself as a key development opportunity for Fijian women rugby players aiming for international recognition. As the Vodafone Fijiana XV gears up to face the Wallaroos this Saturday, forwards coach Ifereimi Rawaqa notes that participation in Super Rugby has significantly enhanced the quality of players within the national camp.

“The good thing about Super Rugby is that it’s our pathway from our local competitions to international level,” Rawaqa shared following a training session at Albert Park. He is optimistic that the lessons learned from the competition have equipped Fijiana players to compete effectively against elite teams like the Wallaroos, who are ranked fifth in the world.

Josivini Naihamu, a centre from the Fijian Drua, is pushing to regain her place in the match squad after a stint recovering from injury. Despite the challenges, she remains focused and dedicated, expressing gratitude for the strength to keep training and striving for selection. “Training has been tough because I was injured, just trying hard to come back during sessions,” Naihamu said, highlighting her resilience and determination.

Rawaqa is ensuring that the players refine fundamental skills in preparation for the match. “We will make sure we look after our lineouts, our scrums, our defense and attack. It’s all about execution,” he emphasized. With the match set to kick off at 5 PM at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, excitement is palpable among fans, especially as they seek to back their team in this crucial clash.

Additionally, the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua will host the Reds earlier in the day, making it a thrilling day of rugby for spectators. The upcoming match not only signifies an important chapter in the current season, but also serves as a crucial step for the Fijiana XV leading up to the Rugby Women’s World Cup in 2025. This event reflects the ongoing development and growing enthusiasm for women’s rugby in Fiji, which is producing hopeful prospects for the future.

In conclusion, the match holds promise not just for the teams involved but also for the inspiring journey of women’s sports in the region, motivating both players and supporters as they look towards a bright future.
