Former Fijiana 7s standout Adi Vani Buleki has made waves in women’s rugby by signing with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs for the upcoming National Rugby League Women’s (NRLW) season. This represents a significant achievement not only for Buleki but also for women’s rugby in Fiji, underscoring the growing opportunities available in the sport.
The Bulldogs confirmed Buleki’s inclusion as part of their top 24 squad, alongside her teammates Monica Tagoai, Simi-na Lokotui, and Lahnayah Mahakitau-Monschau. Buleki arrives at the Bulldogs after a successful season with the Western Force in the Super Rugby Women’s competition, where she showcased her skills and potential following five years of representing Fiji in the Sevens circuit, including a notable performance during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Her recruitment has been met with enthusiasm from NRLW Head Coach Brayden Wiliame, who highlighted Buleki’s impressive ability to break through defensive lines and her aggressive defensive play. Wiliame stated, “Vani has shown a great ability to break through the line, is aggressive in defense and has shown a very high work rate and football intelligence.”
This signing aligns with the expanding visibility of women in rugby, especially in Fiji, where athletes like Buleki are paving the way for future generations. Her journey is a powerful testament to the potential for female athletes to transition successfully into competitive leagues, creating an inspiring narrative for young women across the Pacific.
As the Bulldogs commence their pre-season training, they are gearing up for their first match against the Newcastle Knights on July 4 at Accor Stadium. Buleki’s presence in the squad serves not only as a boost for her team but as a shining example of the ongoing progress for women’s rugby, encouraging aspiring athletes to pursue their dreams in sports. The future of women’s rugby appears bright, with players like Buleki breaking barriers and fueling hope for the next generation of female athletes.
