Newly appointed Richard Walker has confirmed the Fijiana sevens rugby team will maintain the same squad for the upcoming Hong Kong Sevens tournament scheduled from March 28 to 30. This announcement features the inclusion of experienced players like Lavena Cavuru and Sesenieli Donu, while Reapi Ulunisau has been released from the squad, paving the way for Michell Seruvatu, who is expected to make her debut in Hong Kong.
The Fijiana team is grouped in Pool C alongside Great Britain, Japan, and France. Walker, who took over as head coach earlier this month, brings a wealth of coaching experience spanning over 15 years, having previously led the USA and Japan women’s rugby sevens teams. His tenure includes notable achievements, such as guiding the Seattle Seawolves to a Major League Rugby Championship. Walker’s appointment follows Saiasi Fuli’s contract expiration in December, and the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has expressed confidence in his capability to elevate the team’s performance as they gear up for significant upcoming events, including the HSBC SVNS Series and the Olympic qualification pathway.
The Fijiana rugby community is optimistic about the fresh directions Walker’s strategic vision will usher in. The commitment to maintaining and nurturing existing talent while fostering a competitive edge in women’s rugby represents a hopeful stance for the team’s future endeavors on the global stage. Through Walker’s leadership, there is a strong belief that the Fijiana team will continue to grow and inspire a new generation of athletes.
