A new coach for the Fijiana women’s rugby sevens team will be appointed at the beginning of 2025. This decision comes after the Fiji Rugby Union’s interim Trustees chairman, Peter Mazey, announced that a search for a new head coach will take place as current coach Saiasi Fuli’s contract ends in December.
“Following extensive discussions with Saiasi Fuli, we have decided to post the coaching position publicly,” Mazey stated. The advertisement for the head coach role will be published in the media soon.
The Fiji Rugby Union is seeking the ideal candidate to guide the women’s team into its next chapter. The new coach will be responsible for developing and executing a high-performance strategy to facilitate the selection of a new team.
Mazey also indicated that all contracts for the women’s sevens players have concluded after the Olympics, with only Younis Bese and Heleina Young remaining under contract until the end of the year.
Fuli expressed gratitude to the Fiji Rugby Union for the opportunity to coach the national women’s sevens team. “Transitioning from a men’s coaching background was challenging. I had been the assistant coach to Gareth Baber before I was asked to lead the team away from relegation, which made for an interesting and difficult five-year journey.”
In another update, Osea Kolinisau will remain as the head coach of the Fiji men’s sevens rugby team for the next four years, as confirmed by Mazey. “Osea’s strong performance over the past four months has showcased his potential and vision going forward,” he mentioned.
Mazey noted that Kolinisau’s primary Key Performance Indicator (KPI) will be a gold medal victory at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
