The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is poised to announce new head coaches for both the Fijiana XV and Fijiana 7s teams this week. FRU chairman John Sanday has confirmed that the recruitment process is in its final stages, with interviews already completed and selected candidates currently reviewing their offer letters.
This decision comes at a pivotal time for the Fijiana teams as they gear up for significant competitions, including the Rugby World Cup for the Fijiana XV and various international tournaments for the Fijiana 7s. The head coach role for the Fijiana XV has been vacant since last October, following the departure of Mosese Rauluni, who notably led the team to an Oceania Championship victory and secured their qualification for the upcoming Rugby World Cup.
The Fijiana 7s has also been without a head coach since December 2023 when Saiasi Fuli’s tenure ended without renewal. Fuli had an impressive five-year run, marked by a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Additionally, rising expectations accompany the new appointments, as the next coaches will be expected to build on the foundations laid by their predecessors. Notably, Waisale Serevi, a legendary figure in rugby sevens, has shown interest in the Fijiana 7s position. He brings valuable experience, as he has previously coached the Indian Women’s 7s team. His involvement could significantly benefit the development of younger talents, as he is also set to help prepare the Under-20 7s squad.
With these anticipated coaching announcements, there is a palpable sense of optimism within the Fijian rugby community. The FRU’s commitment to women’s rugby development reflects a deeper dedication to enhancing performance and inspiring the next generation of players. The upcoming weeks promise to herald a hopeful new chapter for the Fijiana teams, potentially leading them to further success on the international stage.
