Former Fijiana 7s star and Olympian Adi Vani Buleki has officially signed a contract with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs for the upcoming National Rugby League Women’s (NRLW) season. The Bulldogs confirmed Buleki’s recruitment alongside peers Monica Tagoai, Simi-na Lokotui, and Lahnayah Mahakitau-Monschau, all of whom will form part of the team’s top 24 squad.
Buleki arrives from the Super Rugby Women’s competition, where she notably made a remarkable impression during her debut season with the Western Force. Before transitioning to league, the 24-year-old showcased her talent extensively while representing the Fiji Sevens team, including a standout performance at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, where she scored two tries.
Described as an exceptional athlete, Buleki brings a unique combination of speed and skill, making her a dynamic addition to the Bulldogs’ backline. NRLW Head Coach Brayden Wiliame expressed his excitement about finalizing the squad, emphasizing the potential Buleki and Tagoai have to make significant contributions. “Vani and Monica have both shown their prowess in rugby union, and I believe that they can seamlessly transition their skillset to Rugby League,” he stated.
Buleki’s significant ability to break through defensive lines, along with her aggression in defense and high football IQ, positions her as a key player for the Bulldogs. The team has commenced pre-season training and is set to play their inaugural match on July 4 against the Newcastle Knights in a thrilling doubleheader at Accor Stadium.
Buleki’s signing represents not just a personal achievement, but also aligns with the growing momentum and opportunities for women in rugby, particularly in Fiji. As she steps into this new chapter of her career, her journey serves as an inspiring beacon for aspiring female athletes throughout the Pacific region, highlighting the expanding possibilities available in women’s sports.
