The Rooster Chicken Fijiana Drua has kicked off the 2025 Super W season with a remarkable victory, defeating the NSW Waratahs 23-17 at Allianz Stadium in Sydney. This win is particularly significant not only for its immediate impact but also as a form of redemption following their loss to the Waratahs in last year’s grand final.
In a thrilling start, vice-captain Vitalina Naikore made history by scoring one of the quickest tries in Super W history, just 10 seconds into the match. This strong opening set an energetic tone for the Drua, who consistently applied pressure throughout the game, especially in the scrum, which allowed them to gain crucial penalties and establish an early lead. Luisa Tisolo was instrumental in extending their advantage, successfully kicking three penalties and a conversion to give the Drua a commanding 20-5 lead at halftime.
New talent also made a notable impact, with debutant Josivini Naihamu scoring a try, showcasing the successful integration of new players into the squad. The Drua’s defense was robust, successfully holding off a determined comeback attempt from the Waratahs in the second half.
Vice-captain Naikore credited her teammates for their collaborative effort, particularly appreciating the contributions of the new recruits and the strategic direction provided by head coach Ifereimi Rawaqa. She expressed pride in the team’s spirit of unity and resilience, stating, “I really thank the girls for giving their effort, proud of them.”
Looking forward, the Fijiana Drua is set to face the Reds on Saturday at 1:05 PM at Churchill Park in Lautoka. The display of enthusiasm and determination from the team not only thrills their supporters but also signals a bright future for women’s rugby in Fiji and the broader Pacific region. The combination of seasoned players and fresh talent bodes well as they progress through the season, enhancing the prospects for more achievements ahead.
