FIJI Airways Fijiana sevens development team head coach Taione Ratu is optimistic about the forthcoming 2024 Oceania Rugby Sevens Championship. His team, which is primarily composed of emerging young players with experience largely confined to local tournaments, is seen as having significant potential for growth.
Ratu feels the tournament provides a critical platform for these athletes to gain much-needed experience on a larger stage. “The team entered camp last Sunday to begin preparations for the championship, concentrating on developing team unity and honing both their attack and defense strategies,” he stated.
Progress has been promising, with Ratu noting that the players are adapting well and forming a cohesive unit. The age range of the players is between 18 to 25 years, and the guidance from the more seasoned players has been instrumental in the development of the team.
The championship is expected to be fiercely competitive, particularly with the host nation, Solomon Islands, presenting a formidable challenge. However, Ratu remains confident, stating that the team’s familiarity with the rugby field equips them adequately for success in this tournament. He emphasized, “We will face a tough tournament, especially with the hosts in our pool, but the girls have a clear understanding of the challenges ahead.”
The anticipation surrounding the championship offers a hopeful glimpse into the future of Fijiana rugby, underlining the importance of nurturing young talent while benefiting from the experience of established players. Their commitment to improvement and teamwork may just lead to a remarkable performance in the upcoming tournament.
