The Fiji Airways Fijiana sevens team is gearing up for a historic opportunity as they return to Sigatoka for the McDonald’s Coral Coast Fiji 7s next month, aiming for a third consecutive title. The Shangri-La Yanuca Island Women’s Division is poised to be the most competitive since its launch in 2012, with several strong international teams set to compete.
As back-to-back champions, Fijiana enters the tournament with significant momentum under the guidance of head coach Richard Walker. The squad has been focusing on depth, cohesion, and maintaining their signature high-tempo style of sevens rugby, which has gained them recognition on the global stage.
Walker expressed confidence in the team’s development, noting, “We’re really pleased with how the group is tracking. The players are developing well, the connection within the squad is growing, and we’re playing some great sevens rugby. To be chasing three in a row is special, but we know it will take our very best with the quality of teams coming to Sigatoka.”
The 2026 edition is expected to showcase an impressive international field, including both the Chinese Women’s National Teams 1 and 2, alongside other top-level overseas teams keen to challenge the reigning champions on their home turf in Fiji.
“The standard of the women’s division continues to rise every year. Strong international competition is exactly what we want. It pushes us, sharpens our game, and helps prepare us for the demands of the world stage,” Walker added.
Since its introduction, the Shangri-La Yanuca Island Women’s Division has evolved into a cornerstone of the McDonald’s Coral Coast Fiji 7s, offering a premier platform for women’s rugby while delivering exciting match-ups at Lawaqa Park.
With national pride and a coveted three-peat on the line, Fijiana’s title defense is set to be a captivating highlight of the 2026 Coral Coast Fiji 7s, which will kick off on the 15th of next month at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. This tournament promises not just thrilling rugby but also a celebration of the growth and passion surrounding women’s sports in Fiji.
