Fijiana Captain Reflects: The Mental Game Behind the Team’s Olympic Fall

Team Fiji 7s women’s captain, Raijeli Daveua, has admitted to their failure after finishing last at the France Olympic. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games bronze medalists faced a series of defeats: losing 17-14 to Canada in their opening Pool A match, a surprising 40-12 loss to Olympic debutants China, a 38-7 defeat by eventual gold medal winners New Zealand, a 28-22 loss to Brazil in the ninth spot playoff, and a 21-15 defeat by South Africa in the 11th position match.

Entering the Stade de France ranked sixth, the Fijiana squad returned home in last place after losing all their games. An emotional Daveua acknowledged the mental shortcomings of the team, stating that a lack of focus was their downfall. She praised the coaches for their preparation efforts but highlighted the players’ mental preparations as the primary issue.

The unexpected defeat to China saw the Saiasi Fuli-coached side outclassed in many aspects. Daveua remarked on the significance of the Olympics and the high stakes involved. Despite no major injuries, she emphasized the importance of attention to detail in the Olympics.

Looking ahead, Daveua expressed a desire to take up coaching. In the meantime, she plans to return to work and spend time with her loved ones.
