The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has clarified that bonuses were initially withheld from some members of the Fijiana XV squad as a result of internal matters that required investigation. This situation arose after players were informed they would receive a $1,000 bonus for each game won during the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup in England. The team celebrated a victory in their last pool match against Wales, finishing with a score of 28-25.
However, the FRU decided to delay the payment of bonuses to ensure a thorough examination of certain incidents that occurred during the tournament. Koli Sewabu, who was acting as CEO at the time, indicated that the delay was necessary to gather confirmation from the hotel in England regarding events surrounding the team. Although specific details about the incidents were not disclosed, it has been reported that some players may have violated the team’s strict no-alcohol policy.
Sewabu refrained from commenting on the players’ condition but acknowledged that situations arose that involved external individuals entering the hotel. He emphasized that while the matters were not severe, it was crucial for the FRU to gather all relevant information before proceeding with the bonus distribution.
Following their investigation, the FRU has since released the withheld bonuses to the players. This resolution reflects a commitment to ensuring fair treatment while maintaining the integrity of team policies. Despite the challenges faced, the team’s achievements and their eventual recognition highlight the importance of accountability and support within sports organizations.
