Fijiana 7s Show Resilience with Win Over Ireland: What’s Next?

The Fijiana 7s team began their HSBC Singapore SVNS Tournament with an impressive victory, defeating Ireland 26-12 in their first match of the tournament. This win marks the second consecutive victory for the Fijiana against their Northern Hemisphere rivals, having also triumphed at the Hong Kong SVNS a week prior.

During the match, Ireland initially took the lead with a pair of tries from Kathy Baker, one of which was converted by Kate Farrell McCabe. However, Fiji quickly responded; Mereula Torooti scored their opening try just five minutes in, followed by a second try from Vika Nakacia two minutes later. Kelerayani Luvu successfully converted both tries, giving Fiji a narrow edge at halftime, with the score at 14-12.

The Fijiana demonstrated strong defensive capabilities in the second half, scoring two additional tries with Silika Qalo’s try coming just four minutes in, followed by Verenaisi Ditavutu securing the final try in the 11th minute. Luvu continued her excellent kicking form, converting one of those tries to solidify the Fijiana’s lead.

Fijiana’s performance reflects their growth and resilience, particularly after showcasing similar capabilities in previous tournaments, including their earlier success against Ireland in Hong Kong. With their next match against France scheduled for later this evening, fans are optimistic about the team’s potential to carry this momentum forward and aim for continued success in the tournament.

This performance highlights the team’s determination and skill, suggesting a bright future for women’s rugby in Fiji as they compete on the international stage.
