The Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team faced a challenging match against a formidable Australia side, suffering a 38-24 defeat in their first pool game at the Vancouver 7s tournament in Canada.

Australia quickly made their mark, with Maddison Levi scoring within the first minute, followed by Tia Hinds’ successful conversion, giving them an early 7-0 lead. The Aussies maintained the pressure, as Faith Nathan crossed over shortly after, expanding their advantage to 12-0.

Fiji fought back through Atelaite Ralivanawa in the sixth minute, breaking through the Australian defense, and Ana Maria Naimasi’s conversion brought the score to 12-7. However, Australia’s offense continued to shine, with Tia Hinds and Levi each finding the end zone again to push the lead to 24-7.

Reapi Ulunisau responded swiftly for Fiji with a try of her own, narrowing the gap yet again. As the second half commenced, the Fijiana demonstrated their attacking intent with Verenaisi Ditavutu scoring in the 10th minute, but Australia quickly retaliated with Madison Ashby scoring another try, supported by Kahli Henwood’s conversion.

Fiji continued to challenge Australia, with Adi Vani Buleki impressively scoring in the 14th minute, adding hope to their chances. However, a mishap in the closing moments allowed Australia to regain possession and secure their victory with a final try by Mackenzie Davis, capped by Heidi Dennis’ conversion.

Despite the loss, the Fijiana displayed their attacking potential and resilience, showing promise as they prepare for their next matchup against the USA. Fans can catch the LIVE action at 12:57 PM on FBC TV, hopeful for a stronger performance from the team in their upcoming game.
