In a landmark moment for Fiji’s sports history, the Fijiana 7s team presented their itatau, a ceremonial request for blessings, without the presence of the President. This significant occasion took place at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva, where the team sought the support of Minister of Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, ahead of their highly anticipated Dubai 7s tournament.
Traditionally, such ceremonies have been hosted at the State House, making this event particularly notable. It was only the second time the itatau was held outside this official venue, the first being at Boron House, where various sports teams previously presented their itatau to former President Jioji Konrote in 2018.
During the ceremony, Minister Saukuru inspired the athletes, urging them to concentrate on the possibilities that lie ahead in the new season rather than their past results. He expressed unwavering confidence in the team’s potential to uphold Fiji’s pride on the international stage, stating that they carry the hopes and dreams of the nation.
“Remember that the people of Fiji stand firmly behind you,” he encouraged the players, reinforcing the sense of national support.
As the Fijiana team prepares to depart for Dubai this Sunday, they are set to compete against strong opponents, including China, Ireland, and Australia in the group stages. The team is committed to representing their country with honor and determination.
This momentous occasion not only marks a shift in tradition but also showcases the growing prominence of women’s sports in Fiji. The Fijiana 7s team’s journey in Dubai is an opportunity to inspire future generations of athletes while uniting the nation behind their efforts.
The hope is that their participation in the Dubai 7s will not only bring accolades but also amplify support for women’s sports in Fiji, encouraging more young women to engage in athletics and pursue their dreams.
