The Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team is gearing up for the upcoming HSBC Perth 7s, scheduled from January 24 to 26. With only six members returning from the previous squad, the team is tasked with merging seasoned players with fresh talent as they strive to enhance their position in the World Series and secure a spot in the top eight.
Achieving a top eight ranking is vital for the team as it would ensure their participation in the prestigious Los Angeles (LA) 7s, a World Championship event taking place in May where elite teams will compete in a high-stakes tournament. Additionally, finishing in the top eight will help to protect the team from relegation in the 2026 lineup.
Among the returning players is 25-year-old forward Verenaisi Ditatuvu from Drekeniwai, Cakaudrove, who is eager to rise to the challenge and support her teammates. “Training has been tough with many new girls, but we’re all committed to improving our position,” Ditatuvu stated, reflecting the team’s dedication to their goals.
Currently ranked 11th in the World Series, the Fijiana 7s team is determined to climb into the top eight for a chance to compete in the LA 7s. Ditatuvu emphasizes the areas that require enhancement, noting, “As a forward, I need to work on scrums, lineouts, and our fitness as a team.”
Ditatuvu’s international experience adds to her leadership, having recently participated in a 10s tournament in the USA with the Rhinos team. She expressed, “It was my first time overseas and a great experience.”
With a strong emphasis on teamwork and determination, Ditatuvu and her fellow players are prepared to face the upcoming challenges and are optimistic about their chances of securing a top eight finish.
This article highlights the determination and resilience of the Fijiana 7s team as they navigate through changes and prepare for critical competitions. Their focus on teamwork and individual development bodes well for their performance in the upcoming tournament.
