The Minister of Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, has emphasized the need for greater support for women rugby players in Fiji, highlighting the challenges they have faced in their commitment to the sport. His remarks come in anticipation of the upcoming HSBC SVNS Series.
During a special presentation of the traditional “i-tatau” at the FMF Gymnasium, Saukuru openly addressed the numerous obstacles that women in rugby have historically encountered. He noted that many female athletes have faced discouragement and ridicule while pursuing their passion for the game.
Saukuru stated, “It is essential to acknowledge the challenges women rugby players in Fiji have faced historically. Until recently, many of you encountered disapproval and even ridicule for pursuing this sport.” He pointed out that many women have dealt with severe personal struggles on their journey, urging recognition of these hardships.
He encouraged the Fijiana 7s team to remember the sacrifices of those who came before them and to use those struggles to inspire their future achievements in rugby. “Remember the struggles and use it to fuel and obtain more milestones in the game you deserve to play,” Saukuru added.
The Fijiana 7s team is set to depart for Dubai this Sunday, where they will compete as they continue to pave the way for aspiring athletes in women’s rugby in Fiji.
