Timoci Volavola has been appointed as the interim head coach of the Fijiana 7s team and is bringing in a fresh squad for the new season. With only three veteran players remaining, including Ana Maria Naimasi, he aims to rejuvenate support for women’s sevens rugby, especially following a disappointing 12th place finish at the Paris Olympic Games in August.
Volavola, who has previously served as the assistant national coach, noted that a significant number of last season’s players have departed the team. He will announce his finalized 12-member squad on Thursday, contingent upon the clearance of medical results.
Expressing optimism, Volavola has seen substantial progress among the new players since their arrival at camp, which he regards as a promising development. He commented on the challenges ahead but remains determined to inspire renewed backing for the women’s team. The coach emphasized the players’ eagerness to learn, their receptiveness to instructions, and their commitment to earning their spots on the squad.
Despite last year’s struggles, Volavola is committed to a fresh beginning, implementing changes in team culture, discipline, and attitude both on and off the field. He underscored that only those who adhere to team rules will be part of the team moving forward to foster a healthy environment.
Volavola’s primary objective is to secure a position in the top eight of the core team as they prepare for their first major tournament. The Fijiana team will compete in Pool A against formidable opponents: Australia, Ireland, and China. He acknowledged the need for effective recovery from long travel as they gear up to face these strong teams.
In support of Volavola, former sevens representative Emosi Mulevoro will assist in leading the team.
This fresh chapter for the Fijiana 7s team offers a sense of hope and opportunity. With new talent and a revamped focus on discipline and teamwork, there is potential for a resurgence in performance that could significantly elevate the profile of women’s sevens rugby in Fiji and beyond.
Overall, the transition to a newer squad reflects both challenge and optimism, laying the groundwork for a promising season ahead.
