The Fijiana 15s rugby team has commenced its preparation at George Mason University, gearing up for an important match against the USA Women’s Eagles on July 19. This clash marks a significant moment for the team, as it represents their first encounter with the US squad. The match is crucial not only for experience but also serves as a stepping stone in their lead-up to the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup.

The team received a warm welcome from Fiji Embassy staff, including First Secretary Eva Baleitilagica and Second Secretary Edwin Pratap, who officially acknowledged the Vodafone Fijiana team’s presence in the U.S. Veteran player Asinate Serevi expressed confidence in the team’s preparation and looked forward to competing against some of her former teammates on the U.S. side. “This match is not only about strategy but also about the family bond we share off the field,” Serevi stated, emphasizing the spirit of rugby camaraderie.

Currently ranked 15th, the Fijiana squad will test their skills against the ninth-ranked USA team at Audi Field, Washington, D.C. This match aligns with their preparations for the World Cup, where they will compete in Pool B against notable opponents, including Canada, Scotland, and Wales. The Fijiana XV head coach Ioan Cunningham previously highlighted the significance of this match as a test against top-tier competition, which would provide valuable insights into their readiness for the global stage.

The excitement around the match is not just about competition; it’s also about growth and development within the team. Following a recent title defense at the Oceania Women’s Challenge, the players are looking to continue building on their momentum. The blend of experienced players and new talent, including several athletes from the Fijiana 7s team, promises to enhance their performance and agility on the field.

As preparations continue, both players and supporters maintain a hopeful and optimistic outlook toward the match and the upcoming World Cup. This journey represents not only a challenge for the Fijiana 15s but also a chance to inspire future generations of female athletes in rugby. The Fijiana team is dedicated to demonstrating their resilience and talent, aiming for a strong showing in the match against the USA and beyond.
